The Palaiochori Metro (also known as the Metro) is a public rapid transit system serving a large part of the Greater Palaiochori area in Aetolia. The system serves 190 stations and has 200 km of track, 52% of which is above ground. The network has 9 lines, and in 2012/13 carried 670 million passengers, making it the ??th busiest transit system.
The system's first tunnels were built just below the surface using the cut and cover method, and are large enough to take trains of normal size. Later, circular tunnels were bored deeper below the city and beneath the harbour, connecting the outer boroughs. The private company that owned and ran the railway were nationalised in 1950 to form part of the Palaiochori Transport Authority. The current operator, the Palaiochori Transport Authority, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Palaiochori District Holdings, the statutory corporation responsible for most elements of the district infrastructure network in Palaiochori.
